The study on the effect of dietary supplementation of curry leaves (Murrayakoenigii) powder on the anatomy of the jejunum of commercial broiler chicken is of great value in regard to the health status of birds. The aim of the study was to evaluate the gross, histomorphology, and scanning electron microscopic examination of the jejunum ofthe digestive system after the application of curry leaves power in diet.For this purpose,144-day-old commercial broiler chicks (Cobb400) with similar body weights were used.Thecommercial broiler chickens randomly distributed into four groups (T0, T1, T2, and T3,) with each group containing 36 birds and 3 replicates of 12 chicks in each group depending on the concentration of curry leaves power.Diet T0 represented the control group (without supplementation of curry leaves powder), and diets T1, T2, and T3 comprised of 0.25%, 0.50%, and 0.75% of dried curry leaves powder respectively. Fora collection ofthe Jejunum, a centermedian incision was given in the abdominal region,the jejunum was exposed, its topography was studied in situ and the organ was separated out of the body. The research was carried out for a period of two years in the Department of Anatomy & Histology, College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam. The pieces of jejunum were collected from each groupimmediately after slaughter and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution, and were processed as per the standardprocedure (Luna, 1968). The paraffin blocks were sectioned in Shandon Finesse microtome at 5µm thickness and the sections were stained with Mayer’s Haematoxylin and Eosin staining technique for Cellular details as per the method of Luna (1968). For ultra-structural studies, the jejunumof T0 and T3 treatments groups of broiler birds were utilized. The tissue samples were processed as per techniques of Parsons et al. (1991) and slightly modified by SAIF, NEHU, and Shillong. The data of gross anatomy were analyzed as per methods described by Snedecor and Cochran (1994) and were presented accordingly.The jejunum was the longest segment of the intestine and it was situated in the right side of the abdominal cavity.In the current investigation, the wall of the Jejunum of each group of broiler chicken was composed of four layers viz., tunica mucosa, tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. The tunica mucosa projected towards the lumen of jejunum and formed numerous fingers-like structure known as villi. The villi were lined by simple columnar epithelium.In scanning electron microscopy, the jejunum contained finger like projections known as villi in both T0 and T3 group of broiler chickens. It was observed that the shape of the villi was plate likein both T0 and T3 groups of broiler chicken. A small lymphoid follicleand intestinal glands were observed in the lamina propria of T3 group of birds. The lymphoid follicle contained numerous T and B lymphocytes. The surface of T lymphocytes was smooth and the surface of B lymphocytes had digital projection.Numerous clumps of lymphocytes were observed in the lamina propria of the jejunum of T3 group of broiler chicken.
